Bismuth Oxychloride in Mineral Makeup

Acne Makeup

Does this scenario sound familiar? You've worn traditional makeup for years with little to no irritation. Upon hearing about the benefits of mineral makeup, you decide to give it a try. After all, it claims to be better for your skin and healthier overall, so what have you got to lose? And if you've never been able to wear traditional makeup without irritation, mineral makeup sounds like the answer you've been looking for. You buy your first jar and begin wearing it immediately.

Acne Makeup

Except... you're having a reaction you've never had before to makeup. Your skin may be red, irritated, itching, having small bumps or pustules, burning or looking swollen. What is this? How can mineral makeup cause such an extreme reaction?

Acne Makeup

That reaction is likely caused by the ingredient bismuth oxychloride. While bismuth oxychloride is a common ingredient in traditional makeup, as well as mineral makeup, it is used in much higher concentrations in mineral makeup. There are no fillers in mineral makeup like there are in traditional cosmetics (talc, mineral oil, aluminum powder, alcohols and parabens), so the few ingredients left, including bismuth oxychloride, make up more of the recipe.

Acne Makeup

Why Is Bismuth Oxychloride Used In Makeup?

Is it used in makeup because it gives the makeup a silky feel, good slip (this means it applies well to the skin and doesn't drag or grab on the skin) and good adhesion, which helps it stay on your skin. It feels smooth and silky when rubbed between the fingers. It is often described as a lustrous crystalline powder.

It is not the most expensive ingredient, nor is it the least expensive. It is, however, an industry standard and very common. It also gives a visible sheen to the makeup, so it's good at refracting light and that helps draw attention away from, and camouflage, fine lines, wrinkles and minor discolorations. That's a great selling point for makeup.

What Is Bismuth Oxychloride?

Bismuth oxychloride is an inorganic white pigment, and usually comes in two forms: diamond and pearl finishes. The diamond is shimmery and the pearl is more matte. It's formula is BiOCl.

If you look on the periodic table of elements, you'll notice plain old bismuth at atomic number 83, with the symbol Bi. It is the least toxic of it's periodic table neighbors like lead, tin, antimony and polonium. Bismuth in itself is not safe for use in cosmetics, and must be refined and combined with other elements to produce bismuth oxychloride.

Bismuth occurs naturally, but in very small amounts. Most of the bismuth produced in the USA is as a by-product from refining lead, tin, copper, silver and gold ores.

Once the bismuth has been harvested, it is further refined through several processes to remove dangerous elements like lead. Then it is chlorinated, which gives us bismuth chloride (BiCl3). It still poses a severe risk at this point, smelling of hydrochloric acid. When bismuth chloride is combined with water, it starts to decompose and part of the chlorine is replaced by oxygen from the water. This process is called hydrolysis. The remaining compound is bismuth, chlorine and oxygen; Bismuth oxychloride.

Is It Safe To Use?

Bismuth oxychloride is a product that is FDA approved for use in products for the face, eyes, lips and nails. It is a very common and popular ingredient in both traditional and mineral makeup.

However, skin irritation from bismuth oxychloride is not unusual. According the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for bismuth oxychloride, there is a risk of it being a potential irritant to humans when it comes in contact with the skin or eyes.

It is also imperative that bismuth oxychloride be free from toxins when it hits the market. The FDA does have standards outlining this, and in their Electronic Code of Federal Regulations they dictate the composition must be free of impurities except lead, arsenic, volatile matter and mercury in specific amounts and must be 98% bismuth oxychloride.

Buying bismuth oxychloride from countries with less stringent laws may result in increased health risks, so it is wise for companies to buy from highly regulated countries, like the US and Canada.

Should I Use It?

This is a very personal question to answer. Are you are happy with your current makeup and are suffering no ill effects? Would you feel more comfortable using makeup without it? Do you find that you have to buff minerals with bismuth oxychloride into your pores or they are more obvious, and this is irritating your skin? Have you found using mineral makeup without it causes your skin relief and the reaction clears up?

These are all questions to ask yourself when deciding to purchase a brand with bismuth oxychloride as an ingredient. There are many good products available, offering the same benefits as products with bismuth oxychloride, but without the ingredient itself.

Makeup Tips For Pale Skin

Acne Makeup

Pale skin can be very translucent so finding the right foundation is one of your most important tasks. You may find that being so fair that you are a little more prone to aging especially if you live in a sunny climate. I would recommend that if your foundation doesn't contain a good amount of SPF that you always apply sunscreen on a daily basis as part of your beauty routine and, before your foundation to aid you in slowing the aging process.

Acne Makeup

A yellow or beige tint to your base should be enough to minimize the slight redness from your skin if you are prone to acne or if you've been exposed to the elements for too long. It will give you a little warmth to your skin tone. Make sure the color match is perfect, because if your base is too dark, you will look like you are wearing a mask. Use your foundation to even out your skin tone preparing it for the artwork to come next.

Acne Makeup

Go easy using bright colors on your eyes, as on pale skin they tend to be a bit too much. Try soft pastels, sheer shimmers and natural hues with warm undertones. A little mascara is good too. If your iris is pale then you may need to wear a taupe liner to frame your eyes. Groom your eyebrows and line with a blonde brow powder or smudged pencil. Cheek color is where you can bring a little more than the usual natural glow into your coloring. You need richer tones like sheer plum cheek tints and go for a deeper shade of lipstick. This will contrast nicely with brown or red hair. Experiment with brown-reds or berry shades and for a more dramatic evening look a go for true reds.

Acne Makeup

Coral shades are emerging. I love using a gingery sheer eye gloss, lashings of dark brown mascara, lots of warm cheek tint on the apples of my cheeks. I add a hint of shimmer across the top to bring the eyes out. I might use nude glossy lips for something a little funkier and it looks divine on translucent fair skin. I'm a redhead myself but you may have to alternate tones depending on your coloring and hair color.

Makeup Tips and Tricks For Cystic Acne Sufferers

Acne Makeup

Unfortunately, acne is hereditary in my family. What's worse is that cystic acne is the primary acne my family members struggle with. So from the age of about 13, I also struggled with the pain and embarrassment of cystic acne. Often I would only have one or two problem spots or blemishes, but as you probably know, cystic acne is deeply painful and can be very noticeable.

Acne Makeup

I am lucky to be artistic and interested in all things artistic like makeup. So as I approached my teen years I experimented with makeup more and more. I learned ways to conceal my acne. I was so good with cystic acne concealing, that if you ask my friends, they probably wouldn't even remember that I suffered from acne at all. I feel blessed that I learned the proper way to conceal my acne. I saved myself so much embarrassment, once I learned the keys to proper acne concealing.

Acne Makeup

I do remember a few days, before I learned the best tricks, that I stayed home from school because I was so humiliated with my blemish. I don't want anyone to have that experience. I sincerely know what it feels like to be embarrassed of your skin. You avoid eye contact at all costs, you avoid basketball games and school dances, because your face is just "out of control".

Acne Makeup

I want to share with you a few of my time-tested tricks.

The first trick, is not a trick at all. And you've probably heard it before: Don't pick. I'll be candid - most acne sufferers tend to pick their acne. It's gross and difficult to talk about but I want to point it out. Once I stopped touching, prodding and squeezing at my skin, my blemishes cleared up incredibly fast. Especially with cystic acne, picking a cyst does not help. The only way for a cyst to go away is for the swelling to go down. So the better fix would be:

Take an ibuprofen. This one really works. Ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling all over the body and really truly will make a difference with an acne cyst.

Place a hot wash cloth or heat pack on the cyst. In the same way ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling, heat really helps a cyst to calm.

Get a Zeno. The Zeno Acne clearing device is a targeted heat device that is medically safe and effective especially for cystic acne. I know it's expensive. I really do, but I absolutely recommend it. It's going to save you scarring and embarrassment. It makes your acne cyst disappear in half the time any other method would. I would not recommend this if it did not work. I've been duped into so many quick fix acne treatments because I was vulnerable and wanted help. This is something I truly stand behind - I personally own one. I've also heard from so many young women I work with as a makeup artist that it works.

Now here's the top makeup products for concealing acne cysts.

Stick Concealer, the concealer that looks like a lipstick. It has the perfect consistency because it's a little thicker than most concealers. It will last longer which is key for cystic acne sufferers. The concealer needs to really bind to the inflamed skin, otherwise it will slide off and you will be red and noticeable. CoverGirl and Almay have good brands of lipstick-shaped concealer. Try those.

Powder foundation - not translucent or mineral makeup. Powder foundation like Lancome's Dual Finish powder or Clinique's Double Face matte makeup are great. The reason a powder foundation is necessary is to seal in the concealer on top of your acne spot. Put the concealer on and then pat powder foundation over the top with a sponge. I don't recommend using a brush to apply the powder. The patting motion will help bind the texture of the concealer to the powder. This means your makeup will stay put and you know you will be concealed for the whole day. Knowing that your face is smooth and your acne is invisible is such a confidence boost! The best powder foundation, in my opinion is Nars Powder Foundation. Nars wins many of the annual Allure awards and is one of my personal favorite brands.

A simple combo of thick concealer stick and powder foundation will really save you from a red, swollen acne cyst. Make sure you get a concealer brush. I am not one of those people who thinks you have to have a makeup brush. But when you're working with acne, you want to be as hygienic as possible. Instead of using your bacteria-laden fingers, use a clean makeup brush. Your acne will heal much faster if you don't flare it with dirt, oil and bacteria. My favorite is the Afterglow Vegan Concealer brush. But I'm honestly not here to push products or make you buy expensive makeup. You can very easily buy a concealer brush from Target, from Sonia Kashuk.

I hope that this is helpful. Trust me, I know what you're going through, and I hope that you understand that you don't have to live in embarrassment. Little tricks and learning to take care of your skin can go a long way to managing your acne.

When Is Too Young To Start Wearing Makeup?

Acne Makeup

There have been questions raised about how young or old you should be before you start thinking about wearing makeup. Each person is different. Some never wear makeup, some start wearing makeup as young as twelve.

Acne Makeup

Is twelve too young? In today's world children are being pushed to start acting older than they really are, dress older, just be older and never get to be the child they need to be. Wearing makeup is part of the grownup's world and one step for a young girl to take as she finds her way into the adults world. At twelve some girls have already started their periods setting them apart for their classmates.

Acne Makeup

If you as her mother feel your daughter should start looking into wearing makeup then you too should go along and help her with her decisions on the right types of brands that are best to wear.

Acne Makeup

Helping her pick a mascara and a eyelash curler for starters, natural eye shadows and lip gloss. By helping her make these decisions could bring you closer.

Take her to a major department store and have them show her how to apply the makeup could be a very helpful idea specially for those mother's who don't wear makeup at all.

Some may feel that wearing makeup will boosted their child's self confidence and that is a good idea as well. You never know what your child goes through in the day.

Have her start by checking into teen magazines for ideas of what other girls are wearing. Maybe find someone who's face is alike and see how she is wearing her makeup might be of help. Why not have a sleepover and have a trusted female teenager watch over the girls and help them with their makeup questions. Someone closer to their age maybe of help as well.

There is a great book out there written by Bobbie Brown "Teenage Beauty" that was written just for teenagers includes those as young as twelve. It covers the basics of color selection, makeup techniques and also skincare issues.

Those who daughters are already having problems with acne the best bet would to take her to the dermatologist and get started on a skincare routine. You are never too young to start a simple skincare routine such as washing your face with a mild facial soap, a simple moisturizer and sunscreen. It's a habit that all young girls should start anyway. Could help with those mild breakouts she is starting to have.

Once you have decided that she is old enough to wear makeup you could start by attaching permission for when she could wear makeup such as school dances and class parties at school, maybe lip gloss for everyday and mascara and light eye shadow on those special days.

Help her pick out her best feature (eyes, lips) and help enhance them.

Over all most young ladies of twelve are too young for all types of makeup but for lip gloss. By the time they are thirteen with your help it could stop their faces from breaking out, from them wearing makeup all wrong and fake, and help her boost her confidence and your friendship with her. She may not like you stopping her at twelve but by the time she is sixteen she may even thank you.

Benefit Makeup: Boi-ing Concealer Review

Acne Makeup

I got myself the Boi-ing concealer after checking some benefit makeup product reviews. I have beige skin tone, thus 02 works well on me. One particular thing I appreciate from it is that it covers the blemishes nicely. Give it a whirl then dab it onto face. As we know our fingertips temp helps to it melting down onto skin. Just little amount of the product will make the skin look 100 % natural, zero cakey or drying at all. It also is successful on dark spots. Dab small amount, dab carefully on the dark areas, undertake it 2 or 3 times to achieve an excellent outcome. The secret is less amount and more app. I apply this product on my red and hard acne or perhaps the broken out ones as well. To make the most out of it, I personally use them blush other than my fingers. Pat the Boi-ing using the blush tip, apply it on to the pimples from top, bottom, to surrounding, quickly blend the surrounding spot with finger, make the shade looks even. Once it finished, just can't believe that many other people almost never notice the acne existing.

Acne Makeup

Unfortunately, I rarely use wear this item under my eyes, simply because I have got dried skin type plus a few fine lines close to my eyes. Only one or two hours after putting on the Boi-ing, I can certainly observe the lines come to be more noticeable. But occasionally if I have to to take fewer things in my tote, I will merely carry one concealer. That is Boi-ing. Before applying the concealer, use a little bit of eye skincare all around the eyes. Swipe a tiny amount concealer, dab it on. It looks very good even after hours.

Mineral Makeup- Natural Beauty

Acne Makeup

As we become more aware of our environment and more aware of the products that we are putting into and onto our bodies, natural and homeopathic products are taking the cosmetic industry by storm.

Acne Makeup

It's likely you've noticed new skincare and cosmetic companies popping up with "all natural" and "organic" products. Of course, just because they say they are, doesn't necessarily make it true. That is where consumer education comes in, and why it is so important.

Acne Makeup

The title of this article is "Mineral Makeup". After learning what mineral makeup is, what products go into it, and what its benefits are, you can decide if this is the right choice for you.

Acne Makeup

What Is Mineral Makeup?

Mineral makeup is designed from all naturally occurring products. It is often recommended by dermatologists to women with sensitive skin, rosacea, post operative, laser and other procedures because of its intrinsic skin soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a powder makeup of finely milled minerals. It can provide very sheer or very opaque coverage, depending on the formulation and application. However, it still allows natural skin radiance to show through, so you don't get the dreaded "mask" look. It is typically free of fragrance and preservatives. Minerals cannot feed bacteria, so there is no danger of spoilage, thus it needs no preservatives. It does not go bad. It is very good for oily skin because it has several oil- absorbing components.

It is usually applied with a brush, and is typically shown to be "buffed" into the skin. This technique forces the makeup into your pores, which is never a good thing. A technique that works with better quality mineral makeup (which we'll discuss later) is to "dust" the makeup on, instead of "buffing" it. If a brush irritates your skin, you can also use a non-latex or flocked sponge. Application can be done either wet or dry.

What Are The Ingredients?

This is the most important part. Learning what is in your makeup will give you the ability to choose what will meet your needs best. These are the ingredients you will most likely come across.

· Titanium Dioxide- A white natural sunscreen and anti-inflammatory agent. It is highly reflect, with only a diamond being higher, and thus minimizes fine lines and some skin discolorations.

· Zinc Oxide- A natural sunscreen providing broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

· Sericite- A colorless mica that can be used to cut the opacity of Titanium Dioxide and also works as an oil absorber.

· Cornstarch/ Rice Powder- Cosmetic grade- An oil humectant (draws oil out of the pores). Can make acne worse as it is a source of food for bacteria.

· Kaolin Clay- Natural oil-absorption.

· Mica- Natural "glitter". Provides shimmer and sparkle.

· Iron Oxides- Natural pigment- very opaque. Used for tinting cosmetics.

Ingredients To Avoid

These ingredients are also common, but can cause problems so are best to avoid.

· Talc/ Various Powders- Common fillers- can cause respiratory problems.

· FD&C Dyes- Derived from coal tar.

· Bismuth Oxychloride- Known skin irritant- causes itching, rashes and breakouts. Especially prevalent when the wearer sweats.

· Ferric Ferrocyanide- Controversial because of its suspected toxicity.

· Carmine- Crushed beetles.

What Brand Should I Buy?

Well, if you're familiar with mineral makeup, it's likely you've seen the infomercials. After further research you'll find these companies use controversial ingredients, and charge quite a bit for their products.

There are several good mineral makeup companies out there that provide a much better product at a more affordable price, as well as a superior customer experience. They also offer samples, which the larger companies do not. You'll get to try the makeup (unlike in the drugstore!) for a fraction of the cost before you buy it. They don't have expensive advertising and packaging to pay for, so the savings are often passed on to you.

Misconception #4 - Sweat, Chocolate, Caffeine, Acidic Foods, Makeup, and Stress All Cause Acne

Acne Makeup

This misconception isn't entirely true but it's not entirely false either.  Let's look at it a bit closer to see what we mean by this.

Acne Makeup

First, when it comes to sweat, remember that it alone doesn't cause acne.  Sweat is simply droplets of water being released by the body to keep it cool.  There are no bacteria or other harmful elements in sweat itself.

Acne Makeup

When you sweat you do capture bacteria and germs that are already present on the skin or underneath and this gets wrapped up in some areas of the skin.  This is why your underarms and bottom of your feet have a bad odor when they sweat - the bacteria that are there are caught in the sweat and released.  But when it comes to sweat on your face, the sweat itself is not causing bacteria or bringing it to the face in of itself.  If your face was clean before your workout, there's probably no need to use a harsh astringent or cleanser afterwards simply because you have sweat on your face.

Acne Makeup

As for chocolate, caffeine, and acidic foods, it is true that these things can seemingly irritate the face at times but usually this is just for those who have a certain sensitivity to these foods.  If you're allergic to chocolate and the special oils it contains, your face will probably break out when you eat it.  The same can be said of caffeine and virtually any other type of food you can eat.

Many people eat acidic foods or drink a lot of caffeine and don't have a problem with acne or ever break out into pimples, so you can see how these foods don't cause acne just automatically or in of themselves.  On the other hand, anyone that notices that they seem to break out after having chocolate or a lot of coffee or any other food should make a note of that.  Just like one person can have allergies while another person doesn't, you need to be aware of your own system and what causes reactions with your body and on your face.

When it comes to makeup and other facial products, it's true that at one time these were made with such skin-irritating ingredients that they did clog the pores and cause acne.  Additives and other ingredients were so harsh that they did what that defective skin does - form a barrier over pores and hair follicles so that dirt and oil couldn't escape, resulting in acne.  It's true also that many brands of makeup were oil-based so that if someone were prone to acne, the makeup just made it worse.

Today however dermatologists and makeup manufacturers have come a long way toward understanding this problem, and most brands are now what is called non-comedogenic, meaning that they don't clog pores.  The vast majority are also water based rather than oil based, so the mixture doesn't clog the pores and cause an oil buildup on the face.

Of course there are still a few brands, typically the cheapest ones, that have very bad ingredients that are damaging to the skin and that may still cause acne, but these are few and far between.  If you're using any of the higher end brands then you shouldn't have a problem.  Ask someone at your makeup counter for a recommendation as to what would be best for your skin, and don't hesitate to consider switching even if this means a few more dollars out of your pocket.  After all, your face is something that everyone sees every day, so why not spend a few more dollars for makeup that will do the job and not cause additional problems with acne?

Stress and acne.

There does seem to be a link when it comes to stress and acne.  There may be a few reasons for this, but typically it is because the body is reacting to stress by protecting itself physically.

Usually when a person is in a stressful or panic-inducing situation the body will respond with that "fight or flight" response, diverting blood from areas such as the digestive system arms to the important muscles of the legs, readying itself for a confrontation or to run away.

In much the same way, the body may respond to stressful situations by producing even more oil on the skin than before.  It may be doing this to ready itself for a physical attack or simply because many of the bodys systems get perverted when under pressure and stress.  Blood circulation is affected, as is the amount of hydration you have in your system.  Oxygen reserves can be depleted and even the muscles can suffer needlessly.

This added oil can result in acne if one is predisposed to having that skin that doesn't stay open and that allows it to build up in the pores and hair follicles, or if there is just so much oil on the face that it can't be rinsed away under normal conditions.

Acne and Makeup: A How-To Guide

Acne Makeup

Righty...so your new acne medication promises fast results in 10 days, but you've got to face the world today. What can we do to tie over the proceeding period before the acne goes down?

Acne Makeup

Well all you need is to learn a few creative acne makeup concealing tips to help you look your very best at school, work or play.

Acne Makeup

But remember -- Makeup conceals acne, it doesn't cure it!

Acne Makeup

But you already knew that, right? Using makeup to conceal acne isn't difficult, but there are some basic rules that you should always follow.

Your basic acne makeup toolkit

Your three acne hiding weapons will be a concealer, a foundation and a finishing powder. Stay away from the dollar store and use only brand names that you can trust.

Choose only oil-free makeup products that match your skin tone. Oil-free is the key to success here so read the labels carefully. You don't want to aggravate your existing acne problem by layering a fresh coat of oil on skin that already has too much to begin with. Choose a hypoallergenic brand while you're at it.

If this is the first time that you are using a new brand, test the makeup applying small dabs to a spot under your jaw to see how your skin reacts. If you are going to have a problem you'll know within an hour or so after applying it. Nothing's worse than adding more blotches to an already colorful face.

Before you begin

Wash your face with your normal face cleansing product and pat dry. Apply your acne medication per the instructions and let it dry throughly.

Start with the concealer

Apply the concealer in a light dabbing motion directly to any dark blotches or red areas that the acne has produced on your skin. Blend the concealer in using a disposable facial sponge. Use the concealer sparingly. You can always apply more if you need it but you don't want to layer it on too thickly. It will look terrible when it dries.

Next, apply the foundation

Apply the foundation sparingly as well and use a light dabbing motion here too. Blend the foundation with your sponge and reapply to any areas that need it.

And now for the final touch

Apply a light layer of the oil-free powder using a large makeup brush. This will take care of any shine that the acne concealer and foundation left behind and it will give you an even and finished look.

Throw away the disposable sponges when you are through so you don't transfer yesterday's skin oil to tomorrow's clean face!

Before you go to bed

Wash your face throughly to remove all makeup before you go to bed, but preferably as soon as you can after you return home. You want your skin to breath and your acne to get as much fresh air as possible.

I Discovered the Best Makeup For Acne

Acne Makeup

Just about everyone at one point or another has to deal with bad skin in their lives. For most of us the worst is over by the time we hit our twenties, but there are often the telltale signs that remain, including scars and discoloration.

Acne Makeup

Finding the best makeup for acne prone or scarred skin is the toughest part of dealing with the aftermath of acne, or with concealing any breakouts. Some of the best makeup for acne covering is a good foundation not just a basic beauty routine.

Acne Makeup

When looking for foundation for bad skin, it's important to note that the best makeup for acne does not cake, or dry the skin, or settle into creases and scars, as this will usually end up accentuating, rather than concealing problem areas. In traditional circles this would mean a good concealer and some sheer cover liquid foundation but that still has a tendency to cake and settle and if you have serious scarring, then it really looks unnatural.

Acne Makeup

Enter airbrush makeup. Celebrities look so damn good on the silver screen in high definition- why? Answer: Airbrush makeup. You look like you have perfect, flawless skin with no makeup on by airbrushing on makeup. The answer to blemishes is airbrush foundation which effortlessly hides the most embarrassing scarring.

One of the best kept secrets is that airbrush makeup is the absolute best for acne prone or even scarred skin because of how it covers, blends and layers, leaving the skin looking perfectly soft and natural by using the skins own pigment to match and merge. To watch airbrush makeup conceal a tattoo seamlessly and completely is a powerful demonstration but to do it in a way that makes it look like there never was a tattoo is an entirely different story. That type of coverage is undoubtedly the best for people with skin conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will airbrushing foundation on clogged pores make my breakouts worse?
A. Absolutely not. Airbrushing formula is the best makeup for acne prone skin not only coverage wise, but it is also the lightest and least clogging type of foundation out there.

Q. Can airbrush foundation help stop breakouts?
A. No. Applying airbrush makeup over pimples is the best makeup for acne prone skin and will not add to the problem.

Q. Why is airbrush makeup the best makeup for blemishes?
A. Apart from the great coverage, airbrush foundations are also hundreds of times more hygienic than other liquid foundations and applicators, as the only thing to tough the skin is air and makeup many dermatologist recommend airbrushing for cleaner skin.

There are many makeup companies which claim to be the best makeup for acne, but there is only one sort that really stands up to the test of flawless, seamless all day coverage that looks natural, and covers not only breakouts, but scarring and pigmentation, its kind of like having Photoshop in a bottle!
